The Trump administration is preparing a sweeping tax-enforcement campaign that could threaten the privileged nonprofit status of some of the most powerful organizations in America’s left-globalist advocacy network, including George Soros’ Open Society Foundations, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
Treasury officials, according to a report from the New York Post, are drawing up plans to audit organizations suspected of abusing the federal tax code. The reviews could ultimately lead to fines, back taxes and, in the most serious cases, the loss of coveted 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.
The initiative marks a direct challenge to a nonprofit infrastructure conservatives have spent years accusing of operating as a tax-sheltered political machine.
