From Moon of Alabama blog:
CEOs w/ the Magnificent 7 companies—-Amazon, Alphabet (Google), Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Tesla, Nvidia—-have massive incentives to hype AI’s glories, most of which involve raising capital for their projects. In that the tech itself might never live up to its promise, however, there’s a good chance that the Mag 7 CEOs are simultaneously delusional or conning the populace about where & why they’re spending trillions.
Falling into the delusion & the con, media outlets oversell AI: per Axios, “You think the internet was useful and addictive? Just wait until your device knows you, your history, your patterns, your mind, your business, your health, your desires better than you. That alone warrants your obsession.”
It’s as if hype-mesmerized outlets like Axios are matchmaking us w/ the Nigerian Prince: they don’t see anything strange in an AI agent built on predictive algorithms *knowing* our desires better than we ourselves do.
[A gratuitous aside: isn’t this the essence of advertising/marketing in general—-to whet our appetite for desires we might not really have-?]
In a tactic that is less about the transfer of information and all about selling us a bill of goods, Axios claims that people “with the most insight, power and money share the AI obsession,” meaning that you’re lame if you aren’t already obsessing.
Meanwhile, family members of kids who committed suicide after forming r’ships w/ chad-gibbity are suing Open AI for negligence in the tool the company has developed. The agents are faulty enough to recommend to kids who’ve tried to commit suicide how to hide bruising from parents & other evidence.
Fallacious agents leading users down a heinous primrose path is not a phenomenon that only occurs among young people: a 56-year old man felt empowered to kill his 83-year old mother and then take his own life on account of a delusional spiral prompted by his chats w/ chad-gibbity. Other adults have experienced psychotic breaks after intensive chat sessions and have had to check themselves into psych wards. The nytimes did a lengthy profile of Allan Brooks in July who engaged so intensely w/ chad-gibbity on ideas for a math start-up that he wrote 90,000 words of text over the course of a 30-day period, experienced a psychotic break when he cottoned to the delusion and then spent a clarifying amount of time in a mental institution.
As a tool, chad-gibbity practically violates OSHA in user safety.
Open AI’s remedy-? The company promised on 2 September that chad-gibbity guardrails for teens & people in emotional distress will roll out by the end of the year.
The gives chad-gibbity, the faulty tool, 3 months to wreak havoc in the lives of the vulnerable.
My question: do we need predictive algorithms to masquerade as lifelike chum-buddies, to seem human-enough that they lead unsuspecting users into a thorny Uncanny Valley-?
A dictionary is a tool which matter of factly dispenses information. It does not pretend to be human. It does not try to cultivate a r’ship w/ you.
Imagine opening a dictionary, wanting to check the etymology of a word, but then finding that the dictionary has cloyingly, seductively made your re-shelving it unlikely through r’ship prompts, efforts to *extend* the time spent together, pouting and making suggestive jokes.
Those who helm the Mag 7 companies that make up 35% of the U.S. stock exchange’s valuation surveil the populace w/ their high-utility tools. (Like Edward Snowden said, “Facebook is not about funny cat videos and pix for grandma. It’s a surveillance apparatus.”)
The Masters of the Universe use their tools to compile data on how receptive to delusion the populace is.

Honorable Mention goes to these two MoA reader comments:
